How to use Four Thieves oil

I love my four thieves oil. That’s partly because I think I’ve found at least 101 uses for it.

Well, I’m probably exaggerating. But, nevertheless, it’s very handy to have around the house.

Four Thieves oil  is reputedly able to kill germs. Many people believe this five-oil recipe was handed down by a group of Medieval thieves. These men managed to stay healthy during the Black Death, despite their close contact with the sick and dying. Protected by this aromatic formula, they avoided the plague.

Whether or not this story is true doesn’t really matter. That’s because modern research on two popular brands of germ-fighting aromatics shows that one kills certain strains of bacteria. In a laboratory, the other attacked the influenza virus.

Although I have no proof, I like to think my four thieves oil kept me healthy last year. It was the first winter ever I didn’t get sick. However, even though my good health might be a coincidence, I’ll be using this blend again when flu season rolls around.

The potential applications for four thieves extends well beyond routine flu prevention. I use it to wipe down kitchen counters. I’ve put a little in my washer, when I had a super dirty load. I’ve also used this blend for cleaning and for disinfecting our basement dehumidifier.

How to Use Four Thieves Oil

One of the best ways to use four thieves oil is to diffuse it. If you don’t own a diffuser, you can place a few drops in your bath water. It can also be used for massage, but you have to dilute it first in a carrier oil. This stuff is strong. So a good ratio would be one drop of four thieves to one teaspoon of olive, coconut or grapeseed oil.

Four Thieves oil (or similar blends) can also be used in the laundry cycle if you want some extra cleaning power. I probably wouldn’t do this for delicates. But it seems to work well for sheets and towels.

Sometimes, when I’m cutting meat, and juice spills on the counter, I put a drop or two of four thieves on my kitchen sponge, before using it to clean up my kitchen.

I also keep a bottle of this five-oil mix by my computer. It contains rosemary, clove, eucalyptus, cinnamon and lemon. These oils seem to help when I’m working, or trying to concentrate. Research has shown that rosemary, in particular, is able to sharpen the memory.

In general, it’s best to reserve four thieves-type oils for people aged 10 and older. That’s because some of the ingredients in the most popular five-blend recipes. Rosemary and eucalyptus are not recommended for young children.

However, there are special germ fighting oils for children. These are made with more gentle aromatics.

Where to Buy Four Thieves Oil

There are many companies selling specific germ-killing formulas. The original Thieves is made by a company called Young Living. It’s an excellent product. However, I don’t tend to buy MLM oils.

But Young Living products are very high quality. If you want to buy Young Living Thieves, it’s available here.

Instead, I get some of my germ-fighting oils from a small California-based company called Fabulous Frannie. This is a good alternative if you don’t want to buy MLM oils. I’m so happy I’ve found this brand, so I can tell others about it.
