The original Thieves oil is made Young Living. This is a company based in Utah, which was founded in 1993.
Its oils are sold by multilevel marketing distributors. Although I don’t personally prefer to shop this way, I do recognize that Young Living oils are of excellent quality.
The Young Living germ-fighting blend known as Thieves is backed by scientific research. One group of researchers found that it can kill several strains of airborne bacteria in the lab.
In recent years, as more people become aware of the germ-killing potential of aromatics, the word “thieves” has come to mean any type of formula designed to destroy pathogens. But I believe it’s important (and necessary) to make a distinction. Young Living Thieves is the original. The others seem to have been created later.
What is the Original Thieves Oil?
The competitor brands often have similar names. Nearly every other essential oil company sells its own germ-fighting formula. I’ve seen them called Four Thieves, IV Thieves, Five Thieves, Five Sentries and numerous other twists on this theme. That’s not to say they don’t have merit. (Actually, I think they do.) I just want to set the record straight when referring to Thieves oil, sold by Young Living.
Anyway, if you want to own the original, proprietary blend, it’s available for sale online. Some people warn against buying Thieves oil online, and not from a distributor you know. There may be some validity to that point. However, one thing you can do is look at the age of the listing. See who’s selling it, how long that particular seller has been active and if customers are generally satisfied. (Another option is to buy a non-MLM germ-fighting blend. Later in this article I tell you about those as well.)
Thieves Oil Ingredients
The ingredients in the original Thieves oil blend are clove, cinnamon, lemon, rosemary and eucalyptus oils. Mixed together, these oils create a nice warm fall scent. Some of the other four-thieves type oils are made from the same five aromatics I just mentioned. But there are countless variations.
Many essential oils have been studied specifically for their germ-fighting ability. So microbe-busting is not limited to those five oils. But Thieves is the only commercial blend of germ buster I know of that’s been tested in a lab, and found to kill bacteria.
A similar product made by the doTerra company, also based in Utah, was shown to kill viruses in a laboratory setting. It’s made from mostly the same oils. However, doTerra Onguard uses orange oil instead of lemon.
I don’t own any doTerra Onguard, but my mother does and it smells really good. I used it once when I was visiting her, and caught a cold.
Essential Oils that Kill Germs
I’ll also admit I don’t own any Thieves oil either. In the past, I’ve used another brand made by Fabulous Frannie, a small California-based company. It contains the same five kinds of aromatics found in Thieves.
The Fabulous Frannie version of a germ-busting oil, based upon a Medieval story of four thieves, who stole from the sick during a plague, used to be called Four Thieves. Recently, the company changed the name of this product to Protect. You can see the Protect Blend below.
