Thieves Essential Oil Study

Thieves essential oil is becoming widely known as a germ-busting remedy. But do we have any proof that it actually works?

Right now, countless independent distributors assure us this five-oil formula can protect us from pathogens. But do they have anything to back up their statements?

The product we know as Thieves is sold by the Young Living company. A popular story attached to this blend is that it’s the legacy left behind by a group of Medieval thieves.

They used an aromatic recipe to steal from the sick while the Black Death decimated Europe. Protected by these plant extracts, they didn’t catch the fatal disease.

If this story is true, it’s possible these men have left us something very valuable, at a time when we’re seeing an increase in drug-resistant microbes. Essential oils have known germ-killing compounds. In some circles, they’re now being looked as a potential solution to the fact that antibiotics are losing their punch.

Thieves oil is the subject of at least one study. Conducted by researchers at Weber State University in Utah, this proprietary blend was found effective against certain bacterial strains when it was diffused in a laboratory setting. These findings were published in the Journal of Essential Oil Research.

Okay, but what about the fact that Thieves is often promoted as an antiviral product? Can it also help us during cold and flu season?

Some evidence that it might comes from an oil produced by competitor doTerra. This company also has a multi-level marketing structure. Its rival product, On Guard, was the subject of another study. Published in the BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine Journal, it found that this product suppressed one strain of influenza.

This happened in the lab, and not in a clinical setting. So we don’t know the effect of On Guard in humans.

On Guard is very similar to Thieves. Both contain cinnamon, clove, rosemary and eucalyptus oils. But, for the fifth oil, On Guard uses orange, while Young Living adds lemon.

If you interested in either of these products, you probably won’t find them in the stores. Both are widely available online. If you want to purchase Young Living Thieves, it’s available here.

I’ll be honest. I don’t own either of these germ-killing brands. I realize they’re very popular and they have good name recognition. My mother owns doTerra’s On Guard. It smells wonderful. She uses it when she’s sick. If you’re interested in this product, it’s also sold online and it’s available here.

What Type of Germ Fighting Oil Should I Buy?

Even though I think both Thieves and On Guard are excellent, I decided to go with a lesser-known blend sold by Fabulous Frannie. This is a small California-based company that sells a competing product called Protect. I’ve been really happy with this product, and have ordered it repeatedly.
