Thieves essential oil has become famous for it’s potential germ-fighting ability. This oil is sold by the Young Living company, through a network of multi-level marketing distributors.
It’s name is based upon a story of Medieval thieves. During the 14th or 15th Century these men stayed healthy, even though they came in close contact with the sick and dying.
Apparently, they were protected by a special aromatic blend. This seems to be the “inspiration” for the modern version of Thieves oil.
A number of other companies also sell this same five-oil recipe, under a variety of similar names.
In the laboratory, the original Thieves oil has been shown to kill several strains of bacteria. So, perhaps, there is something to this ancient legend of a germ-busting recipe.
Thieves Oil for Children
However, there are concerns about using Thieves oil on children under the age of 10. Some people don’t recommend it. The same advice applies for the many Thieves competitors that contain an identical or a similar mix of oils.
But if you’re interested in aromatic germ protection for children, other options exist. Most essential oils contain infection-fighting compounds. Lavender oil, for instance, has known antimicrobial properties.
One excellent product for young ones is made by Plant Therapy. This Idaho-based company works with world-known aromatherapist Robert Tisserand. It now sells a line of KidSafe blends, designed by Tisserand.
Plant Therapy’s four thieves type oil for children is called Germ Destroyer. It contains oils known to be safe for children between the ages of 2 and 10. Germ Destroyer is made from 100 percent pure spruce, marjoram, lavender, rosalina and lemon oils. Essential oils are strong, so they need to be diluted before applying to the skin. So the 10 ml bottle of Germ Destroyer shown here should last a very long time.
Plant Therapy oils are exceptionally good. I absolutely love them and I’m a satisfied repeat customer.
I’m so happy to have found a handful of companies that I really trust. This is important, because essential oil fraud has been widely reported. Each batch of Plant Therapy is tested twice. One test is run by an independent lab. I believe these oils are every bit as good as the more expensive MLM offerings.
Germ Destroyer, as you can see in the photo, is part of Plant Therapy’s KidSafe line. Everything with this label is safe for children above the age of two.
Plant Therapy recommends either applying this oil blend to the skin, as long as it’s highly diluted. The suggested ratio is mixing 1 to 3 percent of Germ Destroyer in a skin-soothing carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil. You can also put it in a cold air diffuser. This is a good idea if you want to extend the germ protection to multiple members in the family.
Diffusing oils is a very efficient way to getting them into your system. Once they’re inhaled they travel to the lungs, and then into the bloodstream.
